Transfer stations
Transfer stations are located in Avoca, Beaufort, Landsborough and Snake Valley. Council no longer has any of its own operating landfill sites, with all waste now being transported to landfill sites outside the municipality.
Household waste, green waste and recycling deposits will not have a fee at any of our transfer stations. This fee is covered by the waste charge in your rates (unless you're paying an unimproved property rate, in which case there will be a charge).
Vouchers are no longer issued for use by residents at transfer stations in Pyrenees Shire.
Resident users of the transfer stations will need proof of their Pyrenees address – all you need is your licence! Non-resident ratepayers can use transfer stations with a copy of their rates notice.
Please note - transfer stations do not accept any of the following:
- Building and construction waste
- Gas bottles
- Refrigerators that have not been de-gassed
If you have any questions about waste or the transfer stations, please contact our customer service team on1300 PYRENEES (1300 797 363).

All transfer stations can receive domestic waste, green waste, steel and recyclables, including paper and cardboard.
Used car oil can be taken to Avoca and Beaufort.
Mattresses, car and truck tyres will have a separate charge to the general rate.
Landsborough Transfer Station will not accept mattresses, batteries or tyres.
Domestic waste
Domestic waste is defined as general household waste and should be bagged or wrapped securely. Approved recyclables, including green waste, should be separated for ease of deposits at the transfer station. Our transfer station attendants will let you know where to place your waste. View the transfer station fees.
Green waste
A specific area is provided at each of the transfer station facilities for residents to drop off green waste such as tree branches, prunings, grass and leaf litter. The waste is converted into chipped mulch. Domestic quantities of green waste are free for Pyrenees residents to drop off.
E-waste
From old phones, computers and household appliances to power tools and toys, if it’s got a plug, battery or cord and is unwanted, it’s e-waste. It could be any of a whole range of items from work, home or even the garden shed. E-waste can be taken to transfer stations at Beaufort, Avoca and Snake Valley. Collection points for small e-waste items such as batteries, mobile phones and chargers will be at the Avoca and Beaufort Information Centres.
Please note: e-waste requires cash payment for non-residents. View the transfer station fees.
Hard waste
Hard waste such as furniture, bicycles and mowers can be taken to transfer stations.
Asbestos and building waste
Transfer stations to do not accept asbestos or building waste. Established to be the primary source of information about asbestos for all Victorians, the Asbestos in Victoria website provides resources to assist in the safe management of asbestos across Victoria.
Whether you use a licensed asbestos removalist, or remove the asbestos yourself, you must be sure it goes to a licensed landfill. You can find a landfill that will accept asbestos on the EPA website.
Drum Muster
Council is part of the national Drum Muster program and collects empty chemical drums for recycling at the Avoca and Beaufort transfer stations. This service is useful to chemical users - particularly farmers and others undertaking landcare works - and will play an important role in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
Please note the following:
- Containers, either plastic or steel, must be triple rinsed to the satisfaction of the Drum Muster Inspector at the transfer stations.
- Drums can only be dropped off at Transfer Stations on Thursdays.
