Weeds and Pests

Weeds and pests are a significant problem in the Pyrenees Shire, threatening both biodiversity and primary production.

Council is strongly committed to managing weed infestations and pests like rabbits within the more than 2000km of local road reserves we manage. An important part of this strategy is rapid detection, control and early prevention activities.

Council's weed and pest management program is supported by the Victorian Government's Roadside Weeds and Pests Program (RWPP).

Details on objectives, control measures and species targeted in the program can be found in our Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan 2023-2026(PDF, 1MB) .

Identifying weeds

To help identify weeds common to our region you can download a copy of our Weeds of the Pyrenees Region booklet(PDF, 5MB).

There are also resources available on the Agriculture Victoria website to help identify weeds and learn more about invasive plant classifications.

We need your help

All landowners in Victoria have weed-management obligations under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994. You can learn more about controlling weeds on your property at the Agriculture Victoria website.

Council also needs your help to identify and manage weeds on road reserves and Council-managed land. If you see weeds, unusual plants or pests on the roadside, please report it to us by phoning 1300 797 363, visiting our Contact Page, or by using Snap, Send, Solve.
