Council invests in local art showcasing Avoca’s heritage

A fantastic new painting has joined the collection at Gallery 127 in Avoca.
"At the Going Down of the Sun" by Maryborough-based artist Chris Orr is a beautiful depiction of Avoca's landmark War Memorial, which marked its 100th Anniversary in 2021.
Council made the decision to purchase the artwork from Avoca Arts and Gardens Inc. at a cost of $990 at its Ordinary Meeting in June.
CEO Jim Nolan emphasised Pyrenees Shire Council's commitment to supporting a vibrant arts community during the handover of the painting at Gallery 127 on Thursday 20 July.
"This is a great opportunity to celebrate both local art and an important part of our region's heritage," said Mr Nolan. "The acquisition of Chris's wonderful painting comes after a difficult few years for our arts community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with events like the Avoca Art Show being cancelled. Council is keen to continue its support of local art and artists, and encourages locals and visitors to check out the works on display at Gallery 127 and other galleries throughout the shire.
Gallery 127 is open from Friday to Monday 11am to 4pm.
Council's art collection can also be viewed online at the Victorian Collections website.
