Pyrenees Shire Council has completed its inaugural Pyrenees Youth Census first phase, gathering 257 responses from young people across the region.

This groundbreaking initiative captured the voices, needs, and aspirations of our young people (ages 10-24), providing valuable insights into their experiences and challenges.

When asked ‘what things could make our community better for young people?’, feedback revealed some key themes:

More activities and fun places

Improved sports and recreation facilities

Transportation and accessibility

Community and social engagement

Mental health and support services

Safety and environment (e.g. bullying prevention)

Education and employment opportunities

Inclusion and diversity recognition

Entertainment and leisure options

Infrastructure and amenities

Pyrenees Shire Mayor Cr Tanya Kehoe said Council could not be more delighted at the responses.

“Their willingness to share their thoughts and experiences has provided us with a clearer understanding of the issues that matter most. Young voices are vital in shaping the future of our communities, and we are committed to ensuring they are heard,” Cr Kehoe said.

“Filling out surveys can sometimes be a mundane thing to do, so we tried to make the process as fun and engaging as possible. It was also important to get out and about to where young people are, including school visits and forums, gaming and sporting events, Christmas markets, attending community gatherings like the Beaufort Agricultural Show and Australia Day events.

“These are just some of the many insights that will inform our future programs and initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of young people in our region.”

Building on the census findings, Pyrenees Shire is working with partners towards initiatives with, and for, young people.

“We encourage the entire Pyrenees community to keep an eye out for upcoming announcements and youth opportunities that will be promoted soon. This includes the exciting introduction of organised youth and leadership groups across the Shire.”
