Avoca’s new EV charging station is open for business. The 50kW fast charger installed in the expanded carpark in High Street went live on Monday 28 August.

The station, which can recharge two vehicles at once, is operated through a smartphone app and takes around one hour to charge an average electric car from 20% to 80%.

A coat of blue paint will be added to the charging bays next week as the final touch in completing the project.

The new EV charging station joins recently installed facilities in Amphitheatre and Beaufort as part of the Pyrenees charging network.

In its first five weeks of operation, 83 cars “filled up” at the Beaufort charging station using 1590 kWh of energy. As well as saving the equivalent of more than 1500 kg of CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere, this provides a benefit to the local economy as travellers grab a bite or browse local shops while their cars are charging.

“With the use of electric vehicles set to expand rapidly in coming years, these charging stations are an important investment in the future of the region,” said Pyrenees Shire Council CEO Jim Nolan. “The use of the Beaufort charging station has already exceeded expectations and we look forward to seeing the new Avoca facility in action over coming weeks.”

The Avoca EV charging station was installed by Pyrenees Shire Council, with funding through the Commonwealth Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP).
